One
of the best car racing events can be witnessed on the tracks
of the north end of the Sacramento Valley and the Gold Country
which are mostly tight quarter-miles.
Placerville
Speedway: In the El
Dorado County the Placerville Speedway has been famous for its
Saturday evening entertainment events since 1965. Three
divisions of race cars take part each week at the 1/4-mile
high banked clay oval of the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in
Placerville. King of California Sprint Car Series and the
Hoosier Tires Civil War Series are the special guest circuits.
Silver
Dollar Speedway:
Located
about ninety miles south of Atlanta and twenty-five miles west
of Warner Robins, Silver Dollar Raceway is a quarter-mile drag
strip in Reynolds, Georgia. It has been designed and built by
racers for the entertainment and enjoyment of the racers,
their fans and spectators.
One
hundred sixty-eight acres of land
have been used for the track and the most modern standards of
construction have been utilized for professional quality drag
racing. The safety of the spectators and the participants has
been ensured by providing a width of sixty feet for the racing
surface and it is enclosed by a concrete barrier wall. In
order to ensure that there is sufficient stopping room for the
fastest quarter-mile passes, three thousand feet has been used
for the shutdown area. Compulink System III, the system used
by the National Hot Rod Association at all NHRA Powerade Drag
Racing Series events, is used for measuring the times at the
races.
Antioch
Speedway:
Another
spectacular Bay Area dirt track is Antioch Speedway at the
Contra Costa County Fairgrounds. This is a classic
"bull-ring" where there is action at every point of
the track when sprint car races take place. It is a tight
1/4-mile banked clay oval where stock cars and dwarf cars are
normally seen at this track's tacky surface. Intense action is
seen when the NARC sprinters make their appearances there due
to the close confines and because the open wheelers adopt the
"back-'em-in" style.
San
Jose Speedway: This
speedway in the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose,
California was characterized by a 3/8-mile high-banked clay
oval. It started in 1945, and was shut down in 1999 by the
Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. The grandstands were
planned to be converted into a rock concert hall in 2000 but
till 2002 nothing was physically done towards that end. As
such the fans in Silicon Valley have to go to Watsonville or
Antioch to watch dirt track action.
Twin
Cities Speedways
Considering
itself to be the "Action Track of the West" this
1/4-mile clay oval is located in Marysville. Many Hoosier
Tires California Civil War races and Pacific Sprints, stock
cars and mini-stock divisions take place at this track each
week. The Jimmy Sills School of Open Wheel Racing is also
located in Twin Cities. Being a racing legend and a three-time
USAC Silver Crown Series national champion, Sills is a local
favorite. |
